synesthesia

so there’s this guy tod machover. he’s a researcher at MIT media labs. some of the guys at media labs are researching cool stuff but they aren’t actually making stuff that you or i can use. tod, he makes stuff we all can use. not to make our lives easier, but to make them better. he and his team design ways for people who aren’t musicians to make music. they’ve designed these toys. seriously toys. that kids can use to compose intricate rhythms, or even mess with melodies. they’ve also designed this software that lets people visually compose symphonic music. not with notes and scales and other things that musicians use. no, it uses colors and bar graphs and things just about everyone understands. they played some of the music even young kids have composed using it on npr and it was outstanding. very 20th century compositions. it was great.
