punchin the clocks(makers)

normally i don’t have much to say about john mayer, one of sony music’s (i think) singer songwriter types. although i support the genre, mayer doesn’t really do it for me. but he’s perfectly tolerable, unlike sony alternapop whiners train or WORSE, the evil light rock master josh grobin. how does a guy that young make such utterly safe music?

anyhow, john mayer has his own column in the music section of esquire magazine. it’s self deprecating, but not in an annoying way, and honestly i usually agree with him. last month he begged d’angelo to come out with a new album. this month he calls coldplay’s music “a niche in making the sound of solitude a triumphant experience, like Good Will Hunting: the Musical.” although he eventually concludes that coldplay could wrangle a few good albums out of frontman Chris Martin’s recent marriage to gwyneth paltrow (first the love song album, then awful breakup album), it’s nice to see a fellow songwriter take a dig at the band responsible for one of the songs on my most hated list.

Mayer and Coldplay are both on my “Quick! Turn the dial so I don’t have to listen!” list. Mayer is there because he’s way too breath-y in his delivery and his vocal range is about half of an octave, and Coldplay, well, because they’re Coldplay. Away with all of them!

I’m not much of a fan of John Mayer’s music, but his Esquire column cracks me up. He also scored big points with his Chappelle’s Show appearance.
