a week for remakes

i heard ella fitzgerald’s version of sunshine of your love today. i’m not sure if it’s just because it was ella and she can basically do no wrong, but i believe that song, like pressure drop, may be perfect. rod stewart’s maggie may might be one too. that is no matter who remakes it, or how many times you hear it, it still sounds great. which also makes me wonder if there will ever be any modern songs like that.

a few days ago, nigel and i were sitting in fly and we heard what appeared to be a lovingly crafted compilation of the worst remakes imaginable. tori amos doing smells like teen spirit. duncan sheik doing lola, and other awful whiny emo editions of songs that deserve to rock. for good measure, someone had tossed in a steel drum and marching band rendition of gary numan’s cars. it was like a train wreck. so awful, and yet we could not stop listening to it. do not subject yourself to these if you have the opportunity. your sanity deserves better.
