compare and contrast

05Nov06

robby and i were discussing the differences as two men in the public eye come out as gay this week…

“The fact is I am guilty of sexual immorality. And I take responsibility for the entire problem. I am a deceiver and a liar. There’s a part of my life that is so repulsive and dark that I have been warring against it for all of my adult life.” – evangelical minister ted haggard

“I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love.” – actor neil patrick harris

especially when compared to doogie’s coming out, reverend haggard (god what a name!) seems even sadder. such a stark contrast between a man who is content with his sexuality and one who is not. haggard is so sure of his beliefs and teachings that he casts blame on himself. he is the one in the wrong. he cannot even fathom that it might be his beliefs that are wrong. and yet it is those beliefs and the constant castigation that comes with them that forces men like haggard into hookers and drugs. and then the inevitable shame and downfall when they are discovered. if those dudes weren’t so anti-gay to begin with and could just accept the fact that they like dick, they wouldn’t have to live these lies that make it worse for everyone including themselves.
