for real, this time

canadian researchers have discovered that a totally simple, and un-patentable, drug can cause cancer cells to commit suicide. dichloroacetate is inexpensive, and it’s been proven relatively safe treating some other problems. and now these guys have figured out that it turns on the natural power plants inside cells, mitochondria, which cancer turns off. once the mitochondria wake up, they’re all “oh shit,” and force the cell to commit suicide, destroying the cancer.

i’m embarrassed to say it but i think that ursala leguin, who wrote all these sorta pre-teen angst fantasy books that i read when i was an angsty pre-teen, may have predicted something like this.
